At Asda we believe that the best friend to the British farmer is the well-informed consumer which is why we have decided to become a principal sponsor of Open Farm Sunday in 2010. Open Farm Sunday encourages farmers, across the entire food chain, to open their farm gates to the public. The aim is to build a greater connection between farmers and their local community, ultimately educating consumers about where food comes from. For farmers the length and breadth of Great Britain, this provides a fantastic opportunity. It means they can publicise their presence in the local community and teach others about the countryside and what it means to be a British farmer. |

Defra is pleased to support the excellent work of Open Farm Sunday in encouraging people to re-connect with farming and how and where their food is produced. As part of our food strategy, we want to encourage people to be aware of where their food comes from and understand how their choices can affect the environment and their health. Farm visits play an important part in helping people along this journey. |

The Love Food Hate Waste and Recycle Now Home Composting campaigns both highlight the environmental impact of waste sent to landfill, as well as providing practical advice to show how easy it can be to make a difference; whether that is reducing your food waste or starting to compost. Schemes such as Open Farm Sunday allow us all to appreciate the care that goes into the production of our food, which in turn emphasises why making the most of the food we buy is so important. |

In this International Year of Biodiversity we are supporting Open Farm Sunday by sponsoring the event and running on-farm children’s activities at forty of the participating farms across England.
