Christopher Newenham, Wilkin & Sons Ltd
A visit to the Wilkin & Sons Farm on Open Farm Sunday (12th June 10am – 3pm) offers a great opportunity to discover more about the famous Tiptree preserves that have been made on the farm for 200 years. Run by the Wilkin family, the farm is also a member of LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), the organisers of Open Farm Sunday. LEAF is a registered charity that assists farmers and producers, to manage their farms as efficiently and sustainably as possible which as a result, helps them to produce good food with environmental care.
Visitors to the farm at Tiptree on Open Farm Sunday will have a unique chance to see how Christopher and his team look after the environment and manage precious resources such as water. The farm is in the driest part of the UK so there has been significant investment in cutting edge water application technology which means that they only need to use the bare minimum of water to sustain viable and healthy plants.
Take a ride and see and hear about the 4,000 trees and four kilometers of hedgerows that have been planted on the Wilkin & Sons 900 acre farms in the last three years – providing a natural habitat for British wildlife. Special grasses and wild flowers are grown and managed that attract a wide variety of insects and provide ground cover for small mammals and birds. Visitors will see quince trees growing naturally on the edge of brooks (they love the extra moisture) as well as in the managed orchards; and in the mulberry orchard, there are trees that are over 130 years old and are still producing delicious fruit!
Open Farm Sunday at Tiptree is an excellent opportunity to discover the care that’s taken to produce the finest preserves whilst caring for the environment.
