Debbie Evans, Boscawen Farm

A visit to Boscawen Farm on Open Farm Sunday (12th June) offers a great opportunity to discover the story behind your food and so much more. Run by the Robert Owen Communities, Boscawen Farm is a member of LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), the organisers of Open Farm Sunday. LEAF is a registered charity that assists farmers and producers, to manage their farms as efficiently and sustainably as possible which as a result, helps them to produce good food with environmental care.

The event at Boscawen Farm is a great example of how Open Farm Sunday also helps strengthen local communities. Boscawen is part of the National Care Farming Initiative and a 50-acre mixed farm which offers work and training opportunities for the benefit of adults with learning disabilities. Visitors to the farm will see how the farm produces the wide range of food it sells in its farm shop – from eggs and meat to fresh vegetables and preserves made from their own fruit.

Boscawen Farm is also participating in the ‘Let Nature Feed Your Senses Project’ which is part of Natural England's Access to Nature programme, run by LEAF and the Sensory Trust and funded by the Big Lottery Fund's Changing Spaces programme. This project helps people who usually can’t get out on to farms, to connect with nature and the countryside, through food and farming.  At Boscawen this includes a Sensory Wildlife garden, with aromatic plants that attract wildlife including birds and insects, which visitors will also be able to discover for themselves on Open Farm Sunday.
