Peter Davies, Slade Farm

A visit to Slade Farm on Open Farm Sunday (12th June) offers a great opportunity to discover the story behind your food and so much more. Organised by LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming), Open Farm Sunday is an annual event when over 400 farms of all sizes and types across Great Britain open their gates to the public. LEAF is a registered charity that assists farmers and producers, to manage their farms as efficiently and sustainably as possible which as a result, helps them to produce good food with environmental care.

Slade Farm is an organic farm on the Glamorgan Heritage Coast, run by Peter and Rosamund Davies and home to sheep, cattle and pigs and a host of wildlife too, for which the farm has won many awards. In 2008 the RSPB awarded Slade Farm the accolade of the Most Wildlife Friendly Farm in the UK. The Davies are not only passionate about producing good food in a sustainable way but also believe that events such as Open Farm Sunday are an excellent way to show consumers what farming is all about. They are planning an action packed day for visitors on Open Farm Sunday including guided walks around the farm, scarecrow making and even pig racing! There will be an opportunity to try your hand at milking and feeding the lambs and of course to taste some of the food produced on the farm.

But one of the best ways to see all the work Peter and his team do to care for the countryside is to take one of the three tractor and trailer rides around the farm. This includes a Biodiversity trail and a Heritage trail which visits the Iron Age fort that is on the farm. There will also be a display of machinery, new and old and a chance to meet all the animals on the farm.
